Emirates Introduces New Restrictions on First Class for Children

Accommodation Singapore introduces

Emirates, Dubai’s flagship airline, unveiled an important update for travelers wishing to book first-class seats for their families. Effective August 15, 2025, children aged 8 and younger are not allowed to exchange Emirates Skywards Miles for first-class tickets, nor can they use miles to upgrade into that cabin. Parents hoping to secure award travel for toddlers or youngsters will need to explore alternatives in business or economy class, where children’s mile usage remains unaffected.

The updated terms and conditions specifically apply to award tickets and miles upgrades, meaning families cannot use their frequent flyer points to secure first-class seats for children. However, the policy does not affect cash bookings, allowing families to purchase first-class tickets directly for children of any age.

This change has sparked debate among travellers, especially those who frequently use miles to book family holidays. Many travellers view first class as an exclusive space where adults enjoy premium services and quiet environments, making them less inclined to welcome children in these cabins. On the other hand, families often advocate for the right to travel in any class they choose, regardless of the company’s restrictions.

Some industry observers argue that allowing children in first class detracts from the luxury experience, with complaints about noise and interruptions. This change is likely an attempt by Emirates to balance luxury standards with customer expectations. However, for families who value using Skywards Miles for premium travel, the policy could present an inconvenience.

This is not the only adjustment Emirates has made to its premium offerings. Over the past few months, the airline has introduced other restrictions, including limiting the redemption of Skywards Miles for first-class seats to passengers with elite status. Moreover, Emirates will no longer partner with Chase credit cards to allow point transfers starting in October 2025, which will likely make it more difficult for some travellers to accumulate enough miles for first-class tickets.

Emirates is also continuing to refine its first-class cabin experience, ensuring it retains its place as one of the most luxurious travel options globally. New features introduced this year include white-glove meal service and the addition of exclusive Dom Perignon Rosé Champagne to the first-class wine list. These enhancements aim to make first class more luxurious and exclusive, continuing to uphold its premium reputation.

For families who regularly rely on miles to book affordable first-class travel, this change could be frustrating. The updated policy limits families’ ability to travel comfortably with young children in the luxurious first-class cabins, especially if they were hoping to upgrade their flights using points. However, families can still book first-class seats for their children with cash, although it may be an expensive option.

This policy may push families to consider other travel options or find new ways to maximise their miles, possibly leading them to choose different airlines with more lenient policies for children in premium cabins.

For luxury travellers who prefer an uninterrupted and quieter flying experience, the policy change could be seen as a positive step towards preserving the exclusivity of first class. This shift may cater to those who expect a tranquil and high-end experience when flying in premium cabins.

Emirates’ new policy restricting children’s access to first class using miles represents a shift in how premium cabins are being managed to enhance the overall guest experience. While families with children will face new challenges in booking premium travel, those seeking a quieter, more luxurious experience in first class may find the change beneficial.

Emirates keeps raising the bar on luxury flying with its first-class cabins. By offering new exclusive services and upgrading seat technology, the airline proves it won’t settle for anything less than the best. For travellers planning ahead, knowing the latest updates is smart. Staying in the loop helps to choose the perfect flight and plan a family journey using the miles the right way.
